The son of an art teacher, I grew up in the suburbs of Detroit and obtained my BFA in Illustration from Northern Michigan University. In 1996 I moved to Chicago to pursue my artistic endeavors. Since then Ive assembled a body of oil paintings done in plein air. My desire to work from direct observation leads me to private places like train yards and rooftops. These unpopulated, tranquil environments offer unusual views of the city and allow me to paint nature and skyscrapers undisturbed in the sun. In my opinion, working from direct observation in natural light is the most engaging way to create art. Capturing parts of the citys scenery during its architectural evolution is my way of conveying history as a painter.
